About Us

Sankofa's work is based on the principle of "Sankofa," which means "to go back and get it." This principle emphasizes the importance of learning from the past to move forward into the future. By working with youths, Sankofa is helping to create a new generation of leaders who are connected to their culture and community while committed to creating positive social change.
About Us

Activities

Arts

Music, dance, videography, painting.

Issued Based Activities

Anti-Black racism, anti-bullying, mental health, healthy relationships, dating, lack of opportunities, and poverty.

Summer Camp

Sankofa Summer Camp offers a variety of activities and workshops.  Our camp is a great way for children to make new friends, learn, and explore their interests.

Our summer camp also provides leadership skills and employment opportunities for Black youths; an experience that helps them learn how to work with others, communicate effectively, and develop important life skills.

BlackGrad

Sankofa’s BlackGrad is an important event that reinforces the bonds of scholarship and extends the sense of community amongst Calgary’s Black students. It is a safe space for Black Graduates to be seen, celebrated, share their stories, and raise awareness about the unique challenges and experiences in a system that was not designed for them.

Our Mission

To empower and inspire Black and other youths to improve their life opportunities and to contribute positively to the communities in which they live through arts and social supports.

Sankofa - “To go back and get it.”

Sankofa is a word from the Twi language of Ghana that translates to “go back and get it” (San - to return; Ko - to go; Fa - to fetch, to seek and take).

It also refers to the Asante Adinkra symbol represented either with a stylized heart shape or by a bird with its head turned backwards white its feet face forward.
